The share market in Australia is controlled by the ASX
The ASX or the Australian Securities Exchange was formed in 1987 after six independent stock exchanges that operated in the state capital cities were combined into one entity. The ASX demutualized in 1998; its shares trade on its own market.
The functions of the ASX are
1) Price discovery
2) Risk transfer and
3) Clearing, settlement and depository (for debt and equity markets).
The ASX also has several other functions. It supervises listed entities within the market and processes company announcements. It also issues annual price queries to listed companies and refers matters to ASIC each year to do with potential market manipulation, insider trading and continuous disclosure breaches.
In a trade execution it facilitates equity trades as well as futures and options trades The ASX watches over billions in daily settlements and holds billions of dollars of securities in safe custody.
